Sediment management challenges explored during Case River 21 on the Scheldt Basin

From 16 to 27 March 2026, the ClimASed project was closely linked to Case River 21, an international Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) on Integrated Water Management under the Erasmus+ framework; This programme is coordinated by IMDO at the University of Antwerp. The two‑week programme brought together students, academics and practitioners to explore climate‑resilient river basin management in the Scheldt watershed, combining lectures, fieldwork and system analysis. The collaboration fits strongly within ClimASed’s objectives, as Case River 21 addresses climate change impacts, droughts, floods and sediment dynamics in a complex, transboundary river basin.

Focus on sediment management

On Tuesday 17 March, ClimASed expertise was directly embedded in the field programme. As every year, ClimASed partners were actively involved in the Case River 21 field trip, together with students from the University of Antwerp, Université de Lille and Munster Technological University (MTU, Ireland), led by Joe Harrington, who participated with his MTU students.

During this field visit, several on‑site presentations were given on sediment issues in the Scheldt watershed, with a specific focus on sediment accumulation and dredging. By bringing students on site, the programme allowed them to directly observe sediment build‑up, discuss dredging strategies and reflect on their environmental, economic and governance implications

Strengthening ClimASed’s link with education and practice

The integration of ClimASed expertise into Case River 21 demonstrates the project’s strong connection to education, capacity building and applied learning.

By engaging directly with students and educators, ClimASed contributes to training the next generation of water professionals while simultaneously testing and illustrating climate adaptation concepts in complex river basin systems such as the Scheldt.
