How can we manage sediment more effectively in a future of extreme weather and rising climate pressures? This key question brought together partners of the ClimASed project in Koblenz (Germany) from 11th to 13th May 2026 for the 4th Project Partner Meeting, hosted by the Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG).
Bringing together project partners the meeting provided an important moment to review progress across work packages and to align on upcoming activities.
Field visit to the Ahr Valley
The meeting started with a field visit to the Ahr Valley. The Ahr is a tributary of the Rhine which was greatly affected by the 2021 flood event. Being in the field with several local experts provided us with insights on flood risk and the challenge of sediment dynamics in a changing climate.
Strengthening collaboration across work packages
During the meeting, partners presented progress and next steps across the project’s core work packages. A lot of hard work has been done in the modelling of future climate scenarios as a basis for the action plans in the different catchments and for the joint transnational sediment management strategy.
Partners shared updates on pilot actions, focusing on key challenges such as erosion, sediment transport, sediment quality, habitats and sediment budgeting. All pilots are well on their way and will be introduced in the upcoming weeks. All partners also identified the stakeholders resulting in the development of a stakeholder community. This is vital for the implementation of local action plans and the transnational strategy.
Looking ahead
In the coming months, ClimASed we will continue to:
- advance pilot actions and monitoring
- develop strategies and action plans
- organise stakeholder workshops and training activities
- share results through the project website and
partner channels
