Project summary

Rivers are strategic natural assets where sedimentation (excess sediment) and erosion (loss of sediment) are major challenges from upstream rivers to downstream estuaries. Climate change worsens this with increased rainfall, droughts and sea level rise leading to increased soil erosion and sediment loads and reduced water quality. Finding climate resilient sediment solutions for rivers is needed for IE, FR, BE and DE and the EU ClimASed aims to increase uptake of sediment management measures to make NWE rivers more climate resilient.

ClimASed, with 9 pilot sites available in IE, FR, BE and DE for monitoring and modelling, will provide river managers with a strategy, place based action plans (on the Scheldt, Shannon and Rhine), methodologies, guidelines & networks to increase capacity to embed climate change impacts in sediment management territorial strategies and local initiatives.

ClimASed will provide 1 joint transnational strategy & 3 action plans for the Scheldt, Shannon and Rhine; 5 solutions for increased climate resilient rivers based on monitoring & modelling, and increased capacity of 20 NWE river authorities to embed climate change impacts in strategies and action plans.
